What to do if there is no sound from the VAIO computer?

    • No sound is output from the speakers of the VAIO computer.
    • No sound is output from the external speaker or earphone.
    • No sound is output from the speakers of the external monitor.

     

     

    Please refer to the steps below to troubleshoot the issue.
     

     


    Restore BIOS to default settings

    Restore BIOS to default settings.

     
    Confirm if there is sound from the VAIO computer when connected with an external earphone or speaker

    Confirm if there is sound from the VAIO computer after connecting a earphone or speaker to the earphone port on the computer (Stereo mini-jack)or the sound output port.
     
    Note:
    • If there is no sound from the internal speaker of the VAIO notebook, but there is sound from the computer when connected with a earphone or speaker.

      There is probably a problem with the speaker of the VAIO notebook.
      Please bring the VAIO notebook to local service center for further inspection.
       
    • There is no sound when connected with an external earphone or speaker, but there is sound from the internal speaker of the VAIO computer.

      There is probably a problem with the earphone or speaker.
      If there is still no sound output on the other earphones or speakers, there is probably a problem with the VAIO notebook.
      Please bring the VAIO notebook to the local service center for further inspection.
       

    If the sound cannot be played back through the connected earphone or the speaker, please proceed with the next steps to troubleshoot the issue.

    Confirm the power, volume and connection
     
    • Check whether the connection between VAIO and the speaker is correct
    • Check whether VAIO computer has been correctly plugged into an electrical outlet
    • Check whether the symptom is resolved after adjusting the volume of the speaker
    • Check whether there is dirt and dust in the port
     
    Note:
    The issue disappears after trying the above suggestions.

    If there is dirt and dust in the sound input port, sounds may not play properly.
    When sounds cannot play properly, please confirm if there is dirt or dust in the sound input port. If so, please clean the dirt or dust out of the port.
    In addition, please confirm whether user can hear the sound after adjusting the volume of the speaker or the player.

    If the symptom persists after performing the above steps, please proceed with the next steps.

    Confirm volume settings and drivers on the VAIO computer

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

       

    2. Click Hardware and Sound.

       

    3. On Sound, click Change system sounds.

       

    4. In the Sound dialogue box, click the Playback tab.
      Confirm whether the setting, which is being applied now in the player device list, is the default one.
      If not, please select a proper player and click Set Default.


       

       

    5. Select a playback device below to modify its settings, and then click Properties.

       

    6. Click the Levels tab, and then check the following items under Speakers.
      •  

      • Confirm whether the mute checkbox is enabled.
        If so, click the button again to disable it.

         

      • Confirm whether the volume is set too low in the scroll bar.
        If so, increase the volume by moving the slider to the right.



        ※ The example above is when the mute function is disabled.

         

      • Click OK and close Speakers Properties window.

     

    Windows XP
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

       

    2. Click Sound -> Speech -> Audio Devices ->Sounds and Audio Devices.

       

    3. On the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, click the Volume tab. Then click Advanced... in Device volume.

       

    4. Check the following items in Volume Control.
       
      • Confirm whether Mute or Mute all (Mute) is enabled.
      • Confirm whether the volume is increased after moving up the slider in the Volume scroll bar.

       

    5. Close Volume Control.

       

    6. On the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties dialogue box, check the following iterms in the Volume tab.
       
      • Confirm whether Mute is enabled in Device volume.
      • Confirm whether the volume is increased after moving up the slider in Device volume scroll bar.

       

    7. On the Speaker settings, click Speaker Volume.

       

    8. Confirm whether volume is increased after moving up the slider in Speaker Volume.

       

    9. Return to Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, click the Audio tab. Then, on the Default device of Sound playback, select the appropriate device.

      Default device may vary from different hardware settings. (The following is an example.)

     
    Note:
    • The symptom is resolved after changing Volume Control.

      When the volume is changed frequently, please confirm the setting of Volume Control.
      In addition, if user has done the following steps, user may change the volume setting.
      If there is no sound from the VAIO computer, please confirm whether the following steps can be performed.
    •  
      1. For notebook
        Pressing Fn + F3 simultaneously can lower the volume while pressing Fn + F4 increases the volume.

         

      2. For VAIO notebook with remote control device.
        Users can adjust the volume in the remote control unit.
    • The symptom is resolved after changing Default(priority)device
      No items to select after upgrading audio.
      Please confirm the setting of Default(priority)device after upgrading audio.

    Confirm whether the VAIO computer can playback Windows sounds

    The VAIO computer can playback Windows sounds
    If the VAIO computer can playback Windows sounds, there is no issue with the hardware.
    Please refer to the following information to check if there is any issue with the audio files that couldn't be played back,or if the setting to the program is incorrect.

    Check if this issue occurs only when running certain program or all programs.
     
    Note:

    When using third-party software, please contact the software developer for the detailed steps.
    • If the issue occurs only when running certain program:
      Please check if the game or program has its own volume setting, or if there are other support files in the game or program.
      Please refer to the instruction manual for detailed steps on how to check these items.

       

    • If there is no sound when running all the programs.
      There is probably a problem with the playing files.
      Check if the file was created in the wrong order or if the file is damaged.
      Please refer to the instruction manual for details.

    No sound on web pages

    Please check the Internet Explorer settings.
    ※ Here are the steps to reset Internet Explorer.

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

       

    2. Click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Internet Options.

       

    3. In Internet Properties, click Advanced tab, and then select Play sounds in webpages in the image below.

       

    4. Click OK and close Internet Properties.

    •  

    • Internet Explorer 7.0

     

    1. Double-click Internet Explorer.

       

    2. Select Internet Options in the Tools.

       

    3. In Internet Options, click Advanced, and then select Play sounds in webpages in the image below.

       

    4. Click OK and close Internet Options.

     
    When the VAIO computer is able to playback Windows sounds

    Please refer to the information below.

    Confirm whether audio drivers can work properly

    Confirm if the audio drivers in Device Manager can work properly.
    1. Right-click Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager.

       

    2. Click + on the left side of Sound, video and game controllers.

       

    3. Check if there is (!) or (?) beside the name of the drivers.

    Reinstall drivers program

    Reinstall the sound drivers.

    When third-party devices like audio are added onto the computer, please contact the device provider before adding these devices.

    Perform recovery installation

    Install Windows (and its built-in programs) using disk or VAIO Recovery Program.
     
    Note:
    If recovery installation cannot resolve the issue, there is a problem with the VAIO notebook. Please bring the VAIO notebook to the local service center for further inspection.
