What is the future of the Reader Store? (Top)

Sony announced in early May that it plans to close Reader Store in Europe and Australia on 16th June 2014. Unless a customer chooses to not be included in the transfer process, Reader Store will transfer customers to eReading company Kobo-an admired eBook store and reading community.  We strongly believe that this transition will allow customers to enjoy a continued high-quality eReading experience.

How will the transfer to Kobo work? Do I need to do anything now? (Top)

Until the Reader Store is closed on 16th June 2014, you can continue to shop at the Reader Store and use your Reader device and applications. In late June, you'll receive an email from Kobo with instructions on how to transfer your library.

We suggest that you download your eBooks from Reader Store prior to 16th June 2014. In some cases, the eBook you have previously purchased may not be available at Kobo and will not be included in the transfer. We also recommend that you use up any remaining credit or vouchers you may have in your account.

Why should I wait until late March to sign up with Kobo? (Top)

As part of the transfer process, we will send you a link to enable you to transfer your Reader Store library and any Reader Store account credits to a Kobo account. If you do not use this link, your library transfer will not work.

Will I still be able to buy new eBooks for my Reader device? (Top)

You will be able to purchase eBooks from the Reader Store all the way up to 16th June 2014. eBooks purchased on the Reader Store up until the Reader Store is closed will be included in the transfer to Kobo.

In the days following the Reader Store closure on 16th June 2014, an update to the Wi-Fi Readers and Reader for PC/Mac software will be available. Once you apply the update, you’ll have access to the millions of titles in the Kobo Store right on your Wi-Fi Reader (PRS-T1, PRS-T2, and PRS-T3) from Sony and Sony’s Reader for PC/Mac software.

Will I still be able to re-download my previous purchases? (Top)

You can download previously purchased eBooks from Reader Store until 16th June 2014. If you transfer your eBook library to Kobo via the transfer link, you will continue to have access to re-download your transferred eBooks from your Kobo library after this date.
In some cases, eBooks purchased at Reader Store may not be available at Kobo for re-download. It is recommended that you download a copy of all eBooks in your library from Reader Store before 16th June 2014.

What will happen to my wishlist at Reader Store? (Top)

Your wishlist will no longer be available after 16th June 2014. Please make a note of your wishlist items prior to this date.

What will happen to my highlights and mark-ups in my eBooks from Reader Store? (Top)

Highlights, bookmarks and annotations you made in your Reader Store eBooks will not be available after you transfer your library to Kobo. You can create new notes, highlights and bookmarks in the Kobo reading experience.

I have a Reader Store pre-paid card/voucher code. Will Kobo honour it? (Top)

Credit balances will not transfer to Kobo when your eBooks do. We encourage you to continue buying eBooks from Reader Store before 16th June to use up any remaining credits or vouchers.

Do I need to do anything to cancel my Reader Store account? (Top)

No, you will not have to cancel your Reader Store account. Your Reader Store account will automatically be terminated after Reader Store closes.

What will be shared with Kobo? (Top)

Unless you choose to opt out of the transfer process, Reader Store  will share your email address, the eBooks you purchased at Reader Store, as well as the amount of any credit in your account as of 16th June 2014. This will ensure that after you transfer to Kobo, you will have access to your library of eBooks purchased at Reader Store.

If you choose not to transfer to Kobo and want to opt out of the transfer process, please enter your email address on Sony’s opt-out page here.  Please note that you will need to enter the same email address as used for your Reader Store account.  If you enter an alternative email address, we will not be able to process your opt-out correctly and your information will be transferred to Kobo. Please note that Reader Store will not provide Kobo with your address or credit card information.

What are the benefits of transferring to Kobo? (Top)

Transferring your account to Kobo means that you will continue to have access to your library of eBooks purchased at Reader Store. You will also benefit from access to Kobo’s catalogue of more than 4 million eBooks, magazines, graphic novels, and kids’ titles.

In June, Kobo will launch a version of its eBook store that you will be able to access directly from your Wi-Fi Readers (PRS-T1, PRS-T2, and PRS-T3) .

App Questions:

Can I continue to use Reader for PC and Reader for Mac? (Top)

You can continue to use Reader for PC/Mac® to manage and read your eBooks from Reader Store. In June, we will also release an update to this software that will enable you to directly connect to the Kobo Store for future purchases.

Can I continue to use Reader for Android and Reader for iPhone and iPad? (Top)

For now, you can continue to use Reader for Android™ Phone & Tablet to read your eBooks from Reader Store. You will also be able to continue purchasing new titles from Reader Store through the app until 16th June 2014. We encourage you to start using Kobo’s Android app after the transfer to Kobo.

For now, you can continue to use Reader for iPhone® & iPad® to read your eBooks from Reader Store. We encourage you to start using Kobo’s  iPhone and iPad app after the transfer.

How can I obtain the updates to my Reader device or Reader for PC/Mac? (Top)

When the update is available, it will automatically appear on your device upon connecting to the internet via Wi-Fi® or connecting your device to a computer with Reader for PC/Mac installed. You will similarly be prompted by Reader for PC/Mac when the update is available. Simply follow the onscreen instructions to complete the updates.
To do a manual update, the information and the updated firmware/software will be available from the Reader support websites.
