What to do if USB device cannot be recognized?

USB device cannot be recognized.

    If USB device is connected with VAIO but cannot be recognized, please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

    Step 1 Check the connected USB.
    Step 2 Reconnect the USB device.
    Step 3 Restore the default setting for BIOS.
    Step 4 Replace the USB interface which is connected with USB.
    Step 5 Check if the USB driver runs normally.
    Step 6 System Recovery





    Step 1 Check the USB being connected.


    Please check the following information.
    • Please confirm whether the VAIO runs normally or not.
      Please check whether the connected USB can be recognized when running VAIO.
      Please consult the USB manufacturer for more detailed information.

    • Please confirm if there is good power supply.
      If there is switch on the USB device USB, turn it on.

    • Please confirm the driver is compatible with the USB device in VAIO.
      Please refer to the following solutions.








    Step 2 Replug the USB device.


    Please follow the instructions below.
    • Turn on the USB power.
      If there is switch on the USB device, please close the switch and then turn it on again when connected with the VAIO notebook.

    • Reconnect the USB device.
      Please disconnect the USB device from the VAIO, and then reconnect it again.

    • Please reconnect the USB device after Windows is started.
      Please perform the following steps.

      1. Turn off the power of VAIO notebook and disconnect the USB device.

      2. Pull off the power line of computer and discharge it for several seconds.

      3. Turn on the computer to start Windows.

      4. Plug the USB device into the computer after Windows is started.

        If there is power switch in the USB device, please turn it on after connecting the device to the computer.







    Step 3 Restore the Default Setting for BIOS.


    If the issue is resolved after restoring the default setting for BIOS.

    Step 4 Replace the interface of the USB Device.


    Check the symptom exist in the USB device or the USB interface.
    Please confirm the following information.
    • Replace the connected USB device (When having several USB devices).

      • Other USB can be recognized by the system.
        If it is the case, there is a problem in the USB device.

      • Other USB cannot be recognized.
        If it is the case, there is a problem in the VAIO USB interface.

    • Replace the connected USB interface (When the VAIO has several USB devices).

      • The USB device can be successfully recognized when using another interface.
        If it is the case, there is probably an issue with the VAIO USB interface.

      • The USB device cannot be recognized when using another interface.
        If it is the case, there is probably an issue with the VAIO USB device.

      Remark
      Please refer to the online support article or the instruction book that comes with the computer for the position and numbers of VAIO USB interface.


    Please try the following steps.
    • There is a problem with USB device.
      Please confirm whether other computers can recognize the USB device when users have several computers.
      If other computers can't recognize either, please consult the USB device manufacturer for more details.

    • There is a problem in USB interface.
      Insert the USB device into another interface, and confirm whether it can be recognized.
      If it can be recognized there is probably a compatibility issue between USB device and VAIO USB interface.







    Step 5 Confirm whether the USB driver runs normally.


    Please check the following information.
    • Please confirm whether the USB driver runs normally.
      Confirm whether there is an exclamation "!" or unjustifiable program items on the interface of Device Manager.
      Regarding how to open the interface of Device Manager, please refer to the following operations.

      After confirming there is an exclamation "!" or unjustifiable program items, reinstall the USB device driver to check if the issue can be solved.
      Regarding how to reinstall the driver, please refer to product instruction book of the USB device, or consult its manufacturer.

    • Confirm whether the USB interface of VAIO can work properly.







    Step 6 Perform system recovery.


    If the above solutions do not resolve the issue, please perform a System Restore to check if the issue can be solved.

    In addition, if the issue persists after performing a System Restore, there is probably a problem in the VAIO USB interface.
    Please bring it to the Sony Service Center for inspection.
