How to disable a hardware device in Device Manager in Windows XP?
Disabling a hardware device in Device Manager in Windows XP.
1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, under Pick a category, double-click the Performance and Maintenance icon.
3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, under or pick a Control Panel icon, double-click the System icon.
4. In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.
5. On the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button.
6. In the Device Manager window, double-click the desired device category.
7. Click to select the desired device.
8. On the menu bar, click Action.
9. On the Action menu, click Disable.
NOTE: If the option to Disable is not available, then the device cannot be disabled in the operating system.
10. In the Disabling this device window, click the Yes button.
