Why can't I capture images from my DV device with DVgate Motion?
Why can't I capture images from my DV device with DVgate Motion?
Solutions to resolve this symptom differs depending on the situation when images cannot be captured from your DV device. Please check the following points in determining the appropriate solution.
--Points to be checked--
1. Settings of the DV device and the VAIO computer.
A. Settings of the DV device.
- Are you using a DV device of other make?
- Is the camera in the video mode?
- Is the recording mode in SP (Standard Play) or LP (Long Play)?
(In the case of LP mode, recorded images should be captured with the camera used for recording.)
* When images are recorded in the LP mode, their playback is guaranteed only with the camera used for recording. Therefore, when you try to capture those images with another device, you may not be able to capture normal images sometimes but end up with mosaic images.
- Is the DV device properly connected to the computer?
(You are advised to try out the connection with another DV cable, if available.)
B. Settings of the VAIO computer.
- Click [Start] -> [Settings] -> [Control Panel].
- Double-click on the [System] icon.
- Click the [Device Manager] tab and check that [i.LINK(1394)PCI Host Controller] on [1394 Bus Controller] is enabled.
- Check that the connected device is recognized as [Imaging Device] in the [Device Manager] tab.
- End all other application software that is currently running since capturing imposes a load on the CPU and other resources. At the same time, exit the software programs that are staying resident in the task bar (printer utility, anti-virus software, etc.), if any.
- Disable [Auto insert notification] of the CD-ROM drive.
a) Select [CD-ROM] on the [Device Manager] tab and uncheck the [Auto insert notification] checkbox on the [Settings] tab.
- Set the free area of the hard disk consecutive.
a) Defragment the hard disk from [System Tools].
- Set a virtual memory.
a) Click [Start] -> [Settings] -> [Control Panel].
b) Double-click on the [System] icon.
c) When [System Properties] appears, click the [Performance] tab and click the [Virtual Memory] button.
d) Select [Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.] and set the value that is larger than the size of actual hard disk drive in both [Maximum] and [Minimum].
e) When the [Confirm Virtual Memory Settings] dialog box appears, click [Yes].
- Disable the network adaptor.
a) Click [Start] -> [Settings] -> [Control Panel].
b) Double-click on the [System] icon.
c) Select [Network adapters] on the [Device Manager] tab.
d) On the [General] tab of the properties of using network adapter, select the [Disable in this hardware profile] checkbox.
- Enable the DMA transfer of hard disk drive.
a) Click [Start] -> [Settings] -> [Control Panel].
b) Double-click on the [System] icon.
c) Select [GENERIC IDE DISK TYPExx] from [System Properties] -> [Device Manager] -> [Disk drives] and select the [DMA] checkbox on the [Settings] tab.
- DVgate motion does not support a compressed disk drive.
Images cannot be captured if compressed disk drive is used.
2. The DV tape
- If the symptom occurs when you use a specific tape, the tape may have caused the problem.
However, if you have specified an In point and an Out point, the symptom may not occur even when it is the specific tape that causes the problem.
- If the symptom occurs when a tape which has been overwritten several times is used.
Try recording some images to a brand new tape and see if the images can be captured normally.
- Is the time code continuously displayed?
If the display of time code flickers or is interrupted, capturing may not be executed normally in some cases.
- If the audio mode or recording mode is changed during the capturing of images from the DV device, capturing stops at that moment.
- Capturing may sometimes fail at the very beginning of the tape.
- Image to which copy protection has been set cannot be captured.
3. Settings of DVgate Motion
- Check if the port to which the device is connected matches the settings of the computer on [Settings] -> [Select Device Controller].
- Check if the triangle on the mode switching button points upward and if the mode window displays [DV?AVI] or [IMPORT].
- Click the [CAPTURE] button to check the settings of the [Capture] dialog box.
Change the settings so that images are saved to a different drive, separate files, a specific directory, another file name, and try capturing the images.
- Is the [Recover Lost Frames] checkbox selected?
a) Check if the time code changes continuously during the capturing of images between the In point and the Out point set to the tape.
If any lost frame or interrupted audio occurs or multiple time codes appear intermittently during the playback between the In point and the Out point, capturing fails sometimes.
b) Select the [Recover Lost Frames] checkbox and check if capturing is performed normally.
c) If capturing fails, uncheck the [Recover Lost Frames] checkbox and try to recapture images again. In addition, try turning off the [Recover Lost Frames] checkbox to avoid recapturing due to the failure at the first attempt, and capture the images again. If images are captured successfully, there may be problems with the tape.
