How to use the VAIO Data Restore Tool to restore data backed up using the Rescue Data feature.

WARNING: There is a risk of data loss. As with any data backup and restoration software, it is not guaranteed that your data will be successfully restored.

IMPORTANT:

• The VAIO Data Restore Tool is not available on all computer models. To determine if it is available on your model, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product.
• The VAIO Data Restore Tool will also not show in step three if the feature is not available.
• This procedures requires that a Rescue Data folder was created using the Rescue Data feature.
• The VAIO Data Restore Tool may not be able to restore all file types. A list of compatible file types is available.
• After this procedure is completed, your rescued data will be available in the folder specified. It will not be restored to the original location. Applications that use this data may not work properly unless the data is moved to the proper location or the application is reconfigured.
• Encrypted or copyrighted files may not be restored properly.

1. Depending on device or media where the Rescue Data folder was created, connect the external hard drive or flash media device to the computer or insert the Blu-ray® Disc (BD), DVD, or CD into the optical drive.
2. Click the Start button and then click All Programs.
3. In the All Programs window, click VAIO Data Restore Tool.

   NOTES:

   • If the link in All Programs is not available, or you are not using a VAIO® computer, run X:\[xxxxxxxx]\RModule\RESTORE.EXE to launch the VAIO Data Restore Tool.
   • In the path above, X represents the drive letter of the HDD, flash media drive, or optical drive that contains the Rescue Data folder. [xxxxxxxx] represents the Rescue Data folder name.
   • If you are using the optical drive, the VAIO Data Restore Tool may launch automatically when the BD, DVD or CD is inserted.
4. In the VAIO Data Restore Tool window, click the Next button.
5. In the Search Rescue Data window, click to select the device or media where the Rescue Data folder was previously created and then click the Next button.
6. In the Confirm Rescue Data window, in the Rescue data list: section, click to select the folder you would like to restore and then click the Next button.
7. In the Confirm Folder to Restore Data window, the default folder where the data will be restore is in the root directory of the C: drive.

   NOTES:

   • If you would like to change the drive where the folder will be created, click the Change drives button, click to select the desired drive and then click the OK button.
   • If you would like to change the name of the folder, click the Change folder name button, type the desired folder name and then click the OK button.
8. Click the Next button.
9. In the Select How to Restore window, click to select one of the following options:

   • Automatic Restore: This option restores all the rescued data at once.

     1. Click the Next button.
     2. In the Automatic Restore window, click the Next button.

        NOTE: By default all of the file formats are selected. You may uncheck some file formats if you do not want them restored.

   • Specify File and Restore: This options allows you to choose the files and folders you would like to restore.

     1. Click the Next button.
     2. In the Specify File and Restore window, click to check the box next to the folders or files you would like to restore and then click the Next button.

        NOTES:

        • This window can be used like Windows Explorer. You can expand folders in the left frame and view contents in the right pane.
        • When you select a folder, all subfolders and files in that folder will be restored.
        • As you select additional folders, the Total size of selected data: section is automatically updated.
        
        
        
10. In the Restore window, click the Start button.

    NOTE: A progress bar will indicate the status of the data restoration process.

11. In the Restore Completed window, make a note of the Restored to: folder and then click the Exit button.

    NOTE: In the example image below, the restored folder is C:\2009-04-27_0.

    
    
    
12. Open the restored folder to view your files.

    NOTE: For information about opening, moving or copying files or folders, consult the Help and Support files of the operating system.

13. Move or copy these files to the desired locations.
