What to do if Fn key cannot work properly?

    • Fn Key can not work.
    • When user presses Fn + F3 or F4, if the screen does not display Volume Control and volume can not be adjusted.
    • When pressing Fn + F2, the Mute function doesn't work.

    Please confirm the settings of VAIO Event Service according to the steps below.


    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click Performance and Maintenance.

    3. Click Administrative Tools.

    4. Double click Services.


    5. When the screen displays the Services window, double click VAIO Event Service.


    6. Click of Startup type, select Automatic, and then confirm Service Status.



      • When Service Status is started, Proceed to Step 8.

      • When Service Status is stopped, click Start menu.


    7. Click OK to close the window.



      Click Close to close all the other open windows.
    If the situation hasn't been improved, Enter Situation hasn't been improved after configuring the service setting .





    Windows Vista

    Please confirm the settings of VAIO Event Service according to the steps below.


    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click Performance and Maintenance.

    3. Click Administrative Tools.

    4. Double click Services.


    5. When the User Account Control window appears, click Continue or Permit.

      For standard user, please refer to the related solutions below.

      If the screen can not display the window of User Account Control, please follow the steps below.

    6. When the screen displays Services window, double click VAIO Event Service.


    7. Click of Startup type, select Automatic to confirm Service Status.



      • If the Service Status is started, Proceed to step 8

      • If the Service Status is stopped, click the Start button.



    8. Click OK to close window.



      Click × (Close) to close all the other open windows.

      If Service Status still can not be changed, Enter Unable to change Service status.

    If Service Status cannot be changed, please try the steps below.

    1. Restart PC

    2. Install VAIO Event Service

      • VAIO Recovery Utility Preinstall Model

        Please first create a support folder and then double click the Setup.exe file in the VAIO Event Service folder according to the steps below.

      • VAIO Recovery Center Preinstall Model

        1. Start up VAIO Recovery Center.
          Please refer to the steps below to start VAIO Recovery Center.

        2. Select VAIO Event Service, click Next.
          Start installation.

        3. When Application program software and drive completed reinstallation appears, click Finish.

    3. If the above steps do not work, perform a System Recovery.

    Please try to install VAIO Event Service before performing System Recovery and check if the issue can be ressolved.











    HKserv.exe may not come as preinstalled software on the VAIO computor.

    To confirm whether HKserv.exe is preinstalled, please refer to the steps below.

    When HKserv.exe is not preinstalled software

    When there is no HKSERV.EXE or HKserv in the Startup item, please try installing Functionkey Utility.

    Regarding how to install Functionkey Utility, please refer to the following steps.



    If Function key still doesn't work after installing Functionkey Utility or Functionkey Utilityfails to install, please try system Recovery to troubleshoot the issue.









    When HKserv.exe is preinstalled software (Only for Windows XP )

    The settings of Terminal Service are not working and user is unable to use Function Keys.
    Please confirm the settings of Terminal Service by the steps below.


    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Administrative Tools.

    3. Double click Services.

    4. Check the Startup type in Terminal Services.



    5. If the Startup type is set to Disabled, double click Terminal Services.

    6. Click of Startup type, select Manual, and then click OK.



    7. Restart Windows after closing all the open windows.
