Sony is offering a firmware upgrade for Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera NEX-5N.

Improvements after firmware upgrade

  • Applies automatic compensation to SELP1650
  • Updates RAW data format version
    *After this update, distortion correction of RAW data will be available with Image Data Converter Ver.4.2 or later.
    The latest version of Image Data Converter is available on the following site.

  • Adds bracket shooting exposure settings (three frames / 1.0EV, 2.0EV, 3.0EV)
  • Makes SELP1650 retract immediately after turning off the camera
  • Improves autofocus operation stability

Improvements from previous version:

  • Enhancement of AF response:
    - When subject distance changes enormously.
  • Improved stability in certain camera operations:
    - When setting Lens Compensation: Distortion to Auto and Picture Effect to Miniature at the same time.
    - When setting Exposure Compensation, Intelligent AF operation improves.

How to check the firmware version

  1. Select Menu → Setup → Version on the camera.
  2. The firmware version is displayed. If your firmware version is Ver 1.02 or later, the upgrade is not required.

Details

IMPORTANT:

  • When performing the firmware upgrade, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery or AC adaptor during the upgrade; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
  • When using an A-mount lens with the LA-EA2 Mount Adaptor (sold separately) and setting to use the AF Micro Adj. function, the registered value is reset.

Start Firmware Updater

  1. Do not connect the camera yet at this point. Double-click Update_NEX5nV102.dmg to start up Firmware Updater.

  2. Double-click the Update_NEX5nV102 icon which appears on the Desktop.

  3. Double-click the FirmwareUpdater icon.

  4. To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes.
    Type the password for the administrative account.



  5. Firmware Updater starts up.

     

  6. Check the USB connection mode

    Select Menu → Setup → USB Connection on the camera, and confirm Mass Storage is selected.



  7. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Note: When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step.

    If the LCD screen of the camera dose not turn off, please try the following methods.
    - Disconnect the USB cable from the camera, then reconnect the USB cable.
    - If there are another USB terminal with the computer, reconnect the USB cable to another USB terminal.
  8. Click Next on Firmware Updater.

    Note: From this step onwards, never turn off the camera until the firmware upgrade is completed.

  9. After confirming the screens above, click Next. The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the lower left part of the screen.

    Upgrade is required



    Note: If Current version is Ver. 1.02, the upgrade is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click Finish. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera again.

  10. Press the center of the control wheel to reset the camera.

    Note: The screen turns off when the center of the control wheel is pressed. Please proceed to the next step.

  11. Click Next on Firmware Updater.



  12. After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the screen below appears.



  13. Click Run to start the upgrade. The progress bar appears while upgrading (approximately 5 minutes).

    Note: Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.

  14. When the upgrade is completed, the screen below appears. Click Finish and disconnect the USB cable.



  15. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera again.

Check the firmware version

  1. Select Menu → Setup → Version on the camera.

  2. The firmware version is displayed. The firmware upgrade was completed successfully if Ver. 1.02 is displayed.
