Sony is always concerned about quality and customer satisfaction and therefore is offering a firmware update for DSLR-A900.
Applicable firmware versions
Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera DSLR-A900 with the firmware Ver 1.00
How to determine the firmware version
If the firmware version is already Ver.2.00, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
- Slide the POWER switch to the ON position.
- Press the MENU Button, then LCD monitor displays menu.
- Press DISP button while menu is displayed.
- A window will show the firmware version on LCD monitor.
- Press the Center button of Multi-selector to close the version display.
Additional features / improvements
- A [Release w/o Lens] item has been added
You can release the shutter even when no lens is mounted on the camera. - The range of the exposure compensation has been expanded
The range of the exposure compensation is expanded to ±5 EV (Before the update: ±3 EV). - An additional setting of the exposure step for the bracket shooting has been added
The following setting has been added to the continuous bracket and single bracket shooting functions: The exposure has been shifted by 3.0 EV and the camera shoots three images ([3.0 EV–3]) (Before the update: Up to 2.0 EV). - The AF function has been improved
The speed of autofocus has been improved. A noticeable result will be acquired when a telescope lens is used. However, this depends on the lens mounted on the camera or the condition under which the subject shot.
Computer and hardware requirements
You need a computer that meets the following requirements:
One of the following Operating Systems:
- Windows® 7
- Windows® Vista Home Basic / Home Premium / Ultimate / Business / Enterprise
- Windows® XP Home Edition/Professional*
* 64-bit editions and Starter editions are not supported.
Operating conditions
- The computer needs to be equipped with a USB port, or a card slot which is suitable for a recording medium to use.
- Available hard disk space is 5MB or more.
- RAM is 32MB or more.
Other items
Please be sure to prepare the following items as it will be used while updating.
POWER source (for the camera)
- When performing the firmware update, use the fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM500H or the AC-PW10AM AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
USB cable
- USB cable supplied with camera
* Operations are not guaranteed if you use a commercially available USB cable.
Recording medium
Please prepare a recording medium from the following.
- Memory Stick Duo/Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo with capacity of 16MB or more
* Those will be generally called "Memory Stick Duo" in the following pages. - CF (CompactFlash) card with capacity of 16MB or more
Note: Recording medium is required to be formatted with the camera beforehand. Please backup the data in the medium before format.
IMPORTANT NOTES: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
WARNING:
- Do not use this firmware to update any other models of digital cameras.
- This Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process, downloading and updating this firmware, acknowledgement of awareness and understanding that this update cannot reverse this installation.

- It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.

Details
Download and extraction procedures
- Double-click the downloaded file DSLRA900v20.zip to extract it.
* Depending on your Operating System, the file may be automatically extracted when downloading. - After extraction, the following file is created.
- DSCA900.APP [ File size : 6,893,472 bytes ]
* The extensions may not be displayed depending on the computer.
Prepare the recording medium
Prepare the recording medium (Memory Stick Duo / CF card) to use for the update, then format it with the camera.
Note:
- If the recording medium is not formatted, the firmware update may not start.
- Please note that all data including even protected images will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored.
Format the recording medium
- Slide the POWER switch to the ON position.
- Press the MENU button, and check the "Memory card" to the proper type you use for update (Memory Stick Duo / CF card) in the Setup menu-2.
- Select Format in the Playback menu-1 with the Multi-selector then press the Center button of the Multi-selector.
- The confirmation window appears. Select OK with multi-selector, then press the Center button of the Multi-selector.
- After the format is completed, press the MENU button to turn off the menu.
Copy the update files to the recording medium
Copy the update files to the recording medium (Memory Stick Duo / CF card) with one of the procedures below depending on your environment.
If your computer has a card slot which is suitable for the recording medium
- Insert the recording medium formatted with the camera in the card slot of your computer.
- Copy the update files DSCA900.APP to the root folder of the recording medium.
If your computer does not have a card slot which is suitable for the recording medium
The camera is connected with the computer with the USB cable, and the update file is copied onto the recording medium.
- Insert a formatted recording medium in the camera.
- Insert a fully charged battery (NP-FM500H) in the camera, or connect the AC Adaptor to the camera.
- Slide the POWER switch to the On position.
- Press the MENU button and select the Setup menu-2 with the Multi-selector.
- Please check that Mass Storage was chosen in USB connection of Setup menu. If it was not chosen, please set to Mass Storage.
How to set the USB connection
1. Select the USB connection with the Multi-selector. 2. Press the Center button of the Multi-selector to display the options of USB connection. 3. Select the "Mass Storage" with the Multi-selector then press the Center button of the Multi-selector. - Press the MENU button to turn off the menu.
- Connect the camera and the computer with the USB cable.
- Copy the update file DSCA900.APP to the root folder of the recording medium inserted in the camera.
- When copying is finished, disconnect the USB cable.
Update the firmware
Note:
- When performing the firmware update, use fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM500H or the AC adapter AC-PW10AM (sold separately).
- Do not remove the battery or AC adapter during the firmware update, otherwise the camera may be permanently damaged.
Before the update, please check the Memory card setting.
- Slide the POWER switch to ON position
- Press the MENU button, and check the "Memory card" to the proper type you use for update (Memory Stick Duo / CF card) in the Setup menu-2.
If the setting of “Memory card" is different, please set it to right. - Press the MENU button to turn off the menu, then slide the POWER switch to OFF position.
Update the Firmware
- Insert the prepared recording medium (Memory Stick Duo / CF card) in the camera, then slide the POWER switch to ON position while MENU button is pressed.
- The confirmation window appears.
Note: If the confirmation window does not appear on the LCD monitor:
*If the recording medium is not formatted, the firmware update may not start.
*Please make sure that the update file (DSCA900.APP) is in the root folder of the recording medium. - Use the Multi-selector to highlight OK, then press the Center button of Multi-selector.
- Updating procedure starts.
- When the “Update is completed.” message appears, the camera automatically restarts after approximately 10 sec. Please wait for the camera to restart.
- After camera restarted, Turn the camera off, then remove the recording medium.
Check the camera firmware version after updating
- Slide the POWER switch to ON position.
- Press the MENU button, then LCD monitor displays menu.
- Press the DISP (Display) button while menu is indicated.
- A window will show the firmware version on LCD monitor. Firmware update is successful if the version number displays Ver.2.00.
- Press the Center button of Multi-selector to close the version number display.
Note:
- If updating procedure was not completed successfully or the camera cannot turn on, please consult your local authorizedSony service facility.
- After updating the camera, format the recording medium or delete the update file DSCA900.APP from the recording medium.
